Restructuring of the peanut sector

Description

Peanuts are the main agricultural production in Senegal. It occupies half of the sown areas (1 ha in 134), concerns 330% of the rural population, i.e. 2018 farms and 63 people. Any strategy to combat poverty must necessarily consider it as a priority.

It is in this context that the flagship project ''Restructuring of the peanut sector'' takes place, the ambition of which is to revive peanut production via an increase in yields (x 1,5) and to strengthen marketing. domestic and international, in particular with a substitution of 20 to 30% of the consumption of imported oils with locally produced peanut oils.

Implementation 

The agricultural component of the esp is operationalized through the Program to revive and accelerate the pace of Senegalese agriculture (PRACAS). The strategy for achieving the objective of national production of 2 tonnes by 000 is based on five main programs, namely (i) the reconstitution of seed capital; (ii) the development of partnerships and shareholding with private actors in the seed value chain; (iii) intensification of mechanization; (iv) the reorganization and revitalization of the inter-professional sector; and (v) the strengthening and diversification of peanut production and outlets and the increased responsibility of manufacturers in financing collection and securing their supply of raw materials.
