Development of the phosphate sector
Description
The “Development of the phosphate and fertilizer sector” project aims to position Senegal in the top 3 phosphate producers in Africa by 2023, with a production of more than 5 million tonnes (Mt) per year.
This project will make phosphate, the country's traditional lever, a robust engine of growth and export for the Senegalese economy.
Implementation method
The institutional anchor of the project is located in the Ministry of Mines and Geology. From an operational point of view, the exploitation of phosphate mines is carried out by several private companies, the main of which are the Chemical Industries of Senegal in Tobène, the Société Minière de la Vallée du Fleuve in Matam, and Baobab Mining and Chemicals Corporation in Ngakham-Chérif Lô in the Thiès region.
The company AFRIG is also in the exploration phase on the Kébémer deposit in the Louga region, as is the company G-PHOS in Bégal.
Major Achievements:
- Concerning the flagship project “Development of the phosphate/fertilizer sector”, phosphate production in 2022 has been established at 2 tonnes with the exploitation of the mines of the chemical industries of Senegal (ICS), SOMIVA (Société Minière De La Vallée Du Fleuve) and BMCC (Baobab Mining and Chemicals Corporation SA). Despite the sharp increase noted in phosphate production since 440, mainly due to the successful relaunch of ICS and the entry into operation of new mines. The development and operation of the Kébémer mines by Cayor Phosphate Mining SA (formerly AFRIG) and Bégal by G-PHOS, which should make it possible to reach the target of 443 tonnes (targeted for 2014), experienced delays mainly due to the slowness noted in fundraising (financing).
Outlook 2023:
- Start of exploitation of new sites for phosphate (Kébémer, Bégal).
